Worked answer: Sell something for $30 on Mercari with the buyer paying $7.50 shipping and Mercari takes $3.75, leaving a $33.75 payout. After the $7.50 label and an $8 item cost, your profit is $18.25.

Mercari has one seller fee worth calculating: 10% of the sale. What trips people up is what "the sale" includes. If the buyer pays for shipping, that shipping is part of the base. If you offer free shipping, it isn't, but the label comes out of your pocket instead. Enter your price, say who pays shipping, and add the label cost and what you paid for the item.

Worked example: $30 item, buyer pays shipping

You list a jacket at $30 and choose buyer-paid shipping. The label is $7.50, so the buyer pays $37.50 before any fees of their own. You bought the jacket for $8.

Mercari
  1. Buyer paid$37.50
  2. Selling fee−$3.75

    Selling fee: 10% of $37.50 (item + buyer-paid shipping)

  3. Payout$33.75
  4. Shipping label−$7.50
  5. Item cost−$8.00
  6. You keep$18.25
Margin, of item price
60.8%
Return on cost
228%

Worked example: the same jacket with free shipping

Now turn off "Buyer pays shipping". The buyer pays $30 flat, and you buy the $7.50 label yourself.

Mercari
  1. Buyer paid$30.00
  2. Selling fee−$3.00

    Selling fee: 10% of $30.00 (item + buyer-paid shipping)

  3. Payout$27.00
  4. Shipping label−$7.50
  5. Item cost−$8.00
  6. You keep$11.50
Margin, of item price
38.3%
Return on cost
144%

That's $6.75 less profit than the first version. You now cover the $7.50 label yourself, and the smaller fee only gives back $0.75 of it. Free shipping can sell an item faster, but if you offer it, build the label into your price. Otherwise you're giving away most of your margin on low-priced items.

Things to know before you list on Mercari

The buyer's fee isn't yours. Mercari adds a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee to the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. The buyer pays it at checkout. It doesn't come out of your payout, so the calculator leaves it out. It does make the buyer's total a little higher than your listed price, which is worth remembering when you're comparing prices with other sites.

Listings from before 2025 were switched over. Under the old structure, a listing created before January 6, 2025 had no seller selling fee until it was updated. The buyer paid instead: a 10% buyer fee plus a processing charge of $0.50 and 2.9%. Mercari's help page says those older listings were updated automatically within a week, and editing one also moves it over. So the 10% seller fee above is the one that applies to your listings today. That switch is one of four dated changes logged in what changed in marketplace fees.

Getting paid fast costs $3. A standard cash-out by direct deposit has no fee. It typically lands within five business days. Instant Pay sends your balance to an eligible debit card for a flat $3 per transfer, up to $600 a month and once a day. On a single $20 sale, that $3 is a big share of the profit. Batch your cash-outs if you use it.

Sales tax isn't in Mercari's base. Unlike some marketplaces, Mercari charges its 10% on item and shipping only. That's why this calculator has no tax field.

How it's calculated

The selling fee is 10% of the item price, plus the shipping the buyer paid if you chose buyer-paid shipping. It's worked out exactly and then rounded half up to the nearest cent. When the buyer pays shipping, we assume they pay exactly your label cost, so their shipping payment and your label cancel out. Payout is item plus buyer-paid shipping, minus the fee. Profit subtracts the label and your item cost. Margin is profit divided by the item price.

Not modeled: Instant Pay (it's a charge on cashing out, not on the sale), fees for failed direct deposits, underpaid shipping label adjustments, and promotions or offers that change the final price. If you accept an offer, enter the accepted price rather than your list price.
