Worked answer: A $50 eBay sale with $8 shipping and 7% tax totals $62.06, so the final value fee is $8.44 plus a $0.40 per-order fee. You're paid $49.16 and keep $29.16 after the $8 label and a $12 item cost.

eBay's fee looks like a single percentage, but the percentage is applied to more than your item price. It's charged on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping the buyer paid and the sales tax eBay collects. Enter your numbers, choose the category and whether you have a Basic Store or higher, and add a promoted listing ad rate if the item sold through an ad. See how that same total compares with what the other four marketplaces charge fees on in what each marketplace charges fees on.
Worked example: a $50 item with $8 shipping
A $50 item in one of eBay's standard categories sells with $8 of buyer-paid shipping to a buyer in a 7% tax state. You don't have a store, the listing wasn't promoted, the label costs $8 and the item cost you $12.
- Sales tax: 7% of $58.00 is $4.06, so the total amount of the sale is $62.06.
- Final value fee: 13.6% of $62.06 is $8.44.
- Per-order fee: the order is over $10.00, so $0.40.
- Total fees: $8.84.
- Payout: $50.00 + $8.00 − $8.84 = $49.16.
- Profit: $49.16 − $8.00 label − $12.00 cost = $29.16, or 58.3% of the item price.
- Buyer paid$62.06

If the same sale had come through a promoted listing at a 5% ad rate, eBay would add $3.10 (5% of the same $62.06 total), and your profit would drop to $26.06.
Worked example: eBay's own $400 sale, with and without a store
These two come from eBay's own fee pages. Both use a $400 item, free shipping and 6% sales tax, for a $424 total.
- No store, standard category (from eBay's own fee page): 13.6% of $424 is $57.66, plus $0.40, for $58.06 in fees. The calculator shows a $341.94 payout.
- Basic Store, women's handbag (from eBay's own fee page): handbags use one rate for the whole sale, 13% at a store level for totals up to $2,000. That's $55.12 plus $0.40, or $55.52, and a payout of $344.48.
eBay's own "You make" totals also take off a $0.35 insertion fee, which we leave out (see below), so its figures will be 35 cents lower than ours. Examples from real sold orders, with the eBay receipts they came from, will be added to this page.
eBay fee traps
Tax is in the fee base. You never receive the sales tax, but you pay the final value fee on it. In the first example, $0.55 of the final value fee comes from the tax alone.
Some categories charge one rate on the whole sale. Most categories are banded like income tax: one rate up to a threshold, and a lower rate only on the part above it. Women's bags and handbags, jewelry (not watches) and bullion work differently. The total decides a single rate for the entire amount. The table below shows which is which.
Athletic shoes flip at $150, tax included. Athletic shoes pay 8% with no per-order fee when the total is $150 or more (7% at Basic Store level and up), and the normal rate below that. Because the total includes tax, a $145 pair can land on either side. With no tax, the fee is $20.12. For a buyer in a 7% state the total is $155.15, and the fee drops to $12.41.
Cheap orders pay a smaller fixed fee, not no fee. Orders of $10.00 or less pay $0.30 per order instead of $0.40. An $8 item with free shipping and no tax still costs $1.39 in fees, over 17% of the price.
Your store level changes the table. A Starter Store is charged the same as having no store. Basic, Premium, Anchor and Enterprise stores share a lower table, but its top rate stops at $2,500 in most categories, compared with $7,500 without a store.
How it's calculated
The total amount of the sale is the item price, plus the shipping the buyer paid, plus sales tax at the rate you enter. The final value fee applies your category's rates to that total, per item, either in bands or as one rate for the whole sale. Each fee line is rounded half up to the cent once, after the exact amount is summed. That matches eBay's trading card example, where $1,054.545 becomes $1,054.55. The per-order fee is $0.30 at $10.00 or less and $0.40 above. The promoted fee is your ad rate times the same total.
Not modeled: the insertion fee (you get 250 free listings a month, then it's $0.35 per listing), the international fee, the extra final value fee charged to sellers rated Below Standard, NFT and heavy equipment categories, and a few store-level exceptions for accessories.
