Poshmark: no pair. Buyer buys Poshmark's label; it never passes through you.

On eBay and Mercari, folding shipping into the item price and calling it "free" changes nothing, since the fee base is the combined total either way. On Whatnot it raises the fee, because the commission is item-only. Poshmark's fee never sees shipping at all.

"Offer free shipping" usually means the same thing to a buyer on any of these five platforms: one price, no separate shipping line at checkout. What it means to your fee is not the same everywhere. Some platforms charge the identical total whether shipping is folded into the item price or billed separately, so the choice is purely about how it looks in the listing. Others don't, because their fee is only on part of what the buyer pays, and which part depends on where the shipping dollars sit.

The decision, platform by platform

PlatformIs buyer-paid shipping in the fee base? What changes if you fold it into "free shipping" instead
eBayYes — the final value fee's base is item, shipping and tax togetherNothing. The total amount of the sale is the same either way, so the fee is the same either way
MercariYes — the 10% selling fee's base is item plus buyer-paid shippingNothing, for the same reason: the base is the combined total, not either piece alone
PoshmarkNo — the fee is on the final order price onlyThere's nothing to fold. Poshmark provides its own prepaid label and charges the buyer for it directly; a seller never sets or collects a shipping amount on Poshmark at all
WhatnotSplit — the commission is on the item price alone; payment processing is on item, shipping and tax togetherThe commission rises. Folding shipping into the item price moves that money into the one line that's actually a percentage of a narrower base; processing stays the same either way, since its own base is the same combined total
DepopProcessing: item, shipping and tax together. Boosting, if the listing is boosted: item price, plus shipping only when you didn't ship on a Depop labelProcessing is unaffected. Boosting isn't, if you used a Depop label — see below

eBay and Mercari: the split doesn't move the number

Both platforms charge their percentage on the item price and the buyer-paid shipping added together, so whether that money arrives labeled "item" or "shipping" makes no difference to what either platform takes. A $40 item with $8 of buyer-paid shipping and a $48 "free shipping" listing charge the exact same fee on eBay ($6.53 final value fee plus the $0.40 per-order fee, on the $48 total either way) and on Mercari ($4.80, 10% of $48, either way). If you've been pricing around one of those two fees, the free-shipping decision is really about buyer psychology and your own shipping cost, not about the fee itself.

Whatnot: the split changes what the commission sees

Whatnot's commission never counts buyer-paid shipping, but folding that shipping into the item price turns it into item price. Take the same $40-item, $8-shipping sale in Whatnot's Other category (the calculator labels it Everything else) at the Standard tier: charged separately, the 8% commission is $3.20 (on $40) and processing is $1.69 (2.9% of the $48 total, plus $0.30), for $4.89 in fees. Fold the $8 into the price and list it as a $48 "free shipping" item: the commission becomes $3.84 (8% of $48), processing is unchanged at $1.69, for $5.53 — 64 cents more, purely from moving money across the line the commission does and doesn't count.

Poshmark: there's no shipping decision to make

Poshmark's fee is worked out on the order price alone, and the buyer never pays you for shipping at all — they pay Poshmark directly for its own prepaid label, outside the price your fee is calculated against. A seller coming from a platform where "free shipping" is a listing toggle won't find an equivalent one here, because Poshmark's shipping was never something you priced in the first place.

Depop: the label choice decides whether the split matters

Depop's payment processing fee is on item, shipping and tax together, so the split never changes it — same as eBay and Mercari. Its boosting fee is different, and only if the listing is boosted. Take a $50 item with $12 of buyer-paid shipping. Shipped on your own label, the boost is 12% of the combined $62, or $7.44 — the same total either way, so folding the $12 into a $62 "free shipping" listing doesn't change that figure. Ship the same sale on a Depop label, and the boost base becomes the item price alone: $6.00 with the shipping billed separately, because that $12 sits in a line the boost never counts, but $7.44 again if you fold it into the item price, because now it's part of the only thing the boost does count. The label choice, not the "free shipping" choice by itself, is what decides whether folding shipping into the price costs more in boosting fees on Depop.
